Abstract My paper defines intimate partner violence (IPV), as well as the four categories of violence: physical, sexual, threats of violence, and psychological/emotional. Within the contents of this paper I discuss the benefits of educating service providers on IPV along with the different forms of violence that may occur for a victim. Moreover, the paper discusses the Incident Severity Index that is developed by the Department of Defense, as well as the discrepancies of how they rate different situations of violence. This paper also discusses the risk factors of IPV, in addition to barriers that limit victims from reporting accurate data. Furthermore, it also entails a comparison and contrast of the symptoms of PTSD among service members/veterans along with showing the characteristic of IPV perpetrators. Lastly, I will discuss the variety of services military families can acquire through the Family Advocacy program and how the programs may benefit victims of IPV, as well as civilian co mmunities. Defining Intimate Partner Violence The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (n.d.) defines intimate partner violence (IPV) as a â€Å"serious, preventable public health problem that affects millions of Americans† (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, n.d., p. 1).
